The eastern side of Helvellyn is very dramatic with two sharp arêtes, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, leading to the summit. The flat summit allowed the first mountain top landing and take-off of a plane in 1926. The poet William Wordsworth used to climb the mountain regularly.
